DALLAS – Spectrum Networks today announced it will launch its award-winning local news network, Spectrum News 1, on local broadcaster KAZD-TV in Dallas. Spectrum News 1’s local news programming, tailored specifically for Texans, will be simulcast on KAZD channel 55 while continuing to air on channel 1 for Spectrum TV customers, starting July 15.
“Local news is the backbone of every community, and we believe access to trusted, objective local journalism plays a critical role in making our communities even stronger," said Mike Bair, Executive Vice President, Spectrum Networks. “We constantly seek new opportunities to expand our local news and community-based reporting to more people and platforms, and now that includes KAZD-TV.”
In a recent nationwide survey, viewers rated Spectrum News as more trustworthy than other local TV news channels by a margin of more than five-to-one.* And at a time when, on average, more than two newspapers per week are shutting down**, and local broadcast news programming is limited due to network schedules, Spectrum News’ growing investment in local news is more important than ever.
Spectrum News 1’s 24/7 programming features a robust lineup of local news and community reporting, local and state politics, zip-code specific weather reports and Texas sports coverage. The network also has more than three dozen journalists embedded in communities across the state, including 10 Dallas-based multimedia and digital journalists, assigned to cover specific beats that address the deeper needs and interests of Texans.
News programs include “Your Morning on Spectrum News 1,” which airs weekdays starting at 5 a.m. and is co-anchored by Charles Divins and Alex Stockwell, along with veteran journalist and Dallas native Brett Shipp delivering the top Dallas news headlines; and “Your Afternoon on Spectrum News 1” at noon anchored by Dr. Nicole Cross, who also anchors “Your Evening on Spectrum News 1” at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Throughout the day, anchor/reporter Niyah Gonzalez will report on the key headlines and news updates in Dallas. On weekends, anchor Todd Boatwright recaps the top news of the week on “Your Weekend on Spectrum News 1” starting at 7 a.m. Karla Leal anchors the news on Saturday evenings and Agustin Garfias anchors weekend newscasts on Sundays at 5 p.m.
Spectrum News 1’s political programming includes “Capital Tonight” with Karina Kling, which airs nightly at 7 p.m.; and its exclusive weekly public affairs program, “In Focus,” hosted by Dr. Nicole Cross, on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. The network also provides coverage of local high school, college and professional sports news with “Beyond the Sport” reports with anchor Travis Recek.
Spectrum News 1 is available to Spectrum TV customers on channel 1 and to all over-the-air viewers in the Dallas-Fort Worth DMA on KAZD-TV on channel 55.1. MeTV, previously seen on Channel 55.1 has moved to Channel 55.2 for over-the-air viewers, but will remain in place on Spectrum lineups. Customers with other providers should check their local listings for channel number. Additionally, all Spectrum residential customers can access Spectrum News 1 on the Spectrum News App.
