Stronger Connections, Smarter Growth: Spectrum and Southern Bank Build a Future-Ready Network
Share Article:
Key Takeaways:
- Southern Bank operates more than 50 branch locations across North Carolina and Virginia, two data centers and two operations facilities, each requiring fast, reliable connectivity to serve customers seamlessly.
- The bank partnered with Spectrum Business to upgrade its entire network with Spectrum’s award-winning Dedicated Fiber Internet and Wireless Internet backup support.
- With built-in redundancy and scalability, Southern Bank can now confidently expand into AI, cloud applications and new services without network concerns.
For years, Southern Bank juggled multiple network carriers across North Carolina and Virginia, managing inconsistent service levels and unpredictable uptime. That fragmentation demanded constant executive attention and created risk.
"Uptime is very much a competitive component," said James Williams, SVP and IT Director, Southern Bank. "When you have a reliable network, and you can drive it consistently and dependably, then you have a good, competitive advantage."
That insight was the catalyst to modernize. Southern Bank realized that it needed more than faster connections – it needed a single partner that could deliver resilience, scalability and peace of mind across every one of their more than 50 branches, two data centers and two operations facilities.
"We wanted a dual-circuit configuration, with strong backup capabilities and a network carrier we felt more confident in," James said. "That's how we landed with Spectrum Business."
A Network Built for Growth
Spectrum Business engineers collaborated with James’ team to install Spectrum’s award-winning Dedicated Fiber Internet circuits at Southern Bank's branches, delivering at least five times the previous bandwidth. Larger circuits went into two data centers and two operations facilities.
Because fiber lines spread across a wide area can be impacted by commercial development, every location also received a Wireless Internet backup circuit – redundancy built in from day one. Critically, Dedicated Fiber circuits can be adjusted on demand without engineers redesigning from scratch.
"Not having to wait for engineers to design a circuit before getting a bandwidth increase is very strategic," James explained. "If we need more, we just reach out to Spectrum Business and increase the circuit." To further increase efficiency, many upgrades happen remotely, without the need for a technician's visit.
The Beauty of Simplicity
One of the biggest wins for Southern's Bank’s leadership? Simplification that didn't mean compromising on what matters most. Southern Bank outfitted branches with Set Back Box TV platforms, which provide video feeds for news, weather and other content, to enhance customer engagement while benefiting from a network engineered with internal redundancy and rerouting. If a circuit goes down – a rare event – Spectrum Business alerts James’ office, typically in under five minutes. The network automatically switches to Wireless Internet backup until fiber is restored, and critical functions remain operational throughout.
Prepared for the Future, Today
Creating a strong, reliable network gives Southern Bank's leadership the ability to plan strategically. Bandwidth demands will increase in coming years, but the infrastructure has capacity and flexibility to handle it – and enable new possibilities.
"Having a reliable, stable network allows us as an organization to look at expanding other opportunities – technology solutions, cloud-based solutions, AI solutions," James said. "A partner like Spectrum Business allows us to have confidence in our network and look ahead at other strategic advantages."
That's the real competitive advantage: not just fast, reliable infrastructure, but a partner that lets you focus on what you do best – serving your community.
