GREENSBORO, N.C. — Spectrum, the #1 rural internet provider in the nation*, today announced the completion of a broadband network expansion project – launching Spectrum Internet, Mobile, TV and Voice services to more than 3,000 homes and small businesses in Rockingham County, North Carolina.

Spectrum’s newly constructed fiber-optic network buildout in Rockingham County is the result of a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership in North Carolina. The total cost of the project was $14.4 million and includes investments from Rockingham County Government, Reidsville Area Foundation, Rockingham County Schools, and Rockingham Community College. Spectrum invested $10.4 million toward the completion of the build.

“Tremendous leadership at the state and local level has been shown in embracing public-private partnerships as a vital strategy for connecting unserved communities,” said Doug Davis, Regional Vice President of Operations, Mid-South Region, Spectrum. “Spectrum joins with state and county partners to bring gigabit broadband and more to thousands of families and small businesses across North Carolina. We are providing local residents and small businesses superior connectivity at highly competitive prices, backed by a team of skilled local technicians and 100% U.S.-based customer service.”

“Broadband access and affordable service options are imperative for communities across North Carolina,” said U.S. Rep. Kathy Manning. “I’m glad to see Charter’s expansion which will deliver quality, high-speed service with affordable options for families in need.”

To celebrate the expansion project, a Connecting Your Community event will take place on Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Rockingham County Government Complex, 371 State Highway 65, Reidsville.

Spectrum will host a roundtable discussion to address the importance of broadband adoption and digital literacy in our communities. State Sen. Phil Berger will be joined by leaders from Rockingham County, Reidsville Area Foundation, Rockingham Schools, and Rockingham Community College for the panel discussion.

“Rural broadband expansion has been a top priority for the state Senate, and it's great to see a local project between Spectrum and leaders in Rockingham County get completed,” said state Sen. Phil Berger. “Spectrum has done fine work to help previously left behind residents and businesses get connected to high-speed internet, and this latest project is a big win for our rural community.”

Additionally, Spectrum, Reidsville Area Foundation and North Carolina 100 will announce a multi-media contest for high school students. Students are invited to submit an essay on the impact of rural broadband expansion in North Carolina. Spectrum will award $2,250 in prize money to contest winners as well as a $5,000 donation to Reidsville Area Foundation to support their programs.

Following the formal announcement, a community festival will take place including a resource fair highlighting local community resources and nonprofits and various outdoor activities.

“The partnership between Rockingham County, Reidsville Area Foundation, Rockingham Community College, Rockingham County Schools, and Spectrum has been transformative for so many of the people living here,” said Lance Metzler, County Manager, Rockingham County. “Spectrum’s commitment to getting rural communities across North Carolina, particularly in Rockingham County, to connect to high-speed internet is commendable.”
