At almost 60 years old, Marco Zavala believes it’s never too late for a new beginning.

After years of unemployment, he was determined to find a career that would last. His job search led him to Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF), a Spectrum Community Center Assist (SCCA) partner since 2023. Marco enrolled in MAOF’s Work Experience Program and was placed at an auction company in Bakersfield, California, where he started building real-world skills as a warehouse associate.

Six months later, Marco’s persistence paid off. On the last day of his program, he was offered a permanent position, starting a new chapter for Marco and his family.

He’s since returned to MAOF to share his story and offer encouragement to a classroom of job seekers working toward the same goal.

“One day I was tired of being tired and decided to change my life,” said Marco. “When you’re ready, places like MAOF are there for you, providing the opportunity, tools and support to succeed.”

Investing in Communities, Building Brighter Futures

Through SCCA, Spectrum is revitalizing community centers in rural and urban areas across its footprint by providing job training, physical improvements, broadband connectivity and in-kind contributions. The Company’s support of MAOF includes more than $100,000 in financial contributions, computer donations, a Smartboard and gigabit internet service.

“This partnership with Spectrum has transformed our computer lab into a state-of-the-art learning environment, equipping tomorrow's workforce with essential job readiness skills,” said Yovani Jimenez, Administrator at MAOF.

Spectrum’s Human Resources team has served as an additional resource for MAOF students, providing free workshops on topics like resume writing and interview skills. More than 60 participants, including Marco, have received tips on how to navigate today’s job market.

“It’s up to me to keep this job, but MAOF opened the door for me, and I will be forever grateful,” said Marco.
