The leap from school to full-time employment can feel overwhelming. Spectrum Scholars prepares students for that complex transition, making the experience feel less challenging and more manageable. It’s more than just a development program – it's a pipeline for student success.
Students in the program are encouraged to explore and be curious, try new things, ask for help and grow at their own pace. By the time they’re done, Scholars are well prepared for full-time work – confident in their abilities, informed by real-world experience and with a solid professional network.
That real support in helping kickstart careers is what sets Spectrum Scholars apart.
Mentorship and Real-World Insights
Carlos Sandoval, a 2025 Spectrum Scholar and incoming senior studying computer engineering at Colorado School of Mines, first heard about the Scholars program when a recruiter from Spectrum visited his campus to talk about scholarship and internship opportunities. Carlos was interested, so he stayed after to learn more, then applied immediately when he got home. “The scholarship is an incredible benefit, but what really stood out to me was the support that comes with it,” Carlos said.
Currently a security engineering intern working in Spectrum’s Denver office, Carlos is immersing himself in new projects and learning as much as he can. “I enjoy the day-to-day dynamics and making different connections,” Carlos said. “This is my first internship, it’s great to see first-hand how the industry works and how what I’m studying in school translates to the real world.”
Bridging the Gap from Student to Professional
Alex Montano, an Associate Business Planning Analyst with Spectrum Community Solutions, entered the Spectrum Scholars program in June 2023 as a rising junior at UConn. The following spring Alex interned on the Communications team, where she researched media opportunities, developed press lists, helped draft communications materials and supported efforts to secure earned media coverage. She credits the program with preparing her for the transition from student to full-time employee.
“A main takeaway for me was learning how to network and navigate the corporate world – which my mentors really helped with,” Alex said. “In school, sometimes I felt uncomfortable speaking my mind or expressing my thoughts. My mentors gave me the confidence to speak directly and honestly, and that’s turned something I shied away from into a strength.”
It wasn’t only improving her communication skills that Alex credits the Scholars program with – it gave her the confidence to pursue her dreams.
“I don't think I would have been comfortable pushing myself to get a full-time job without the Scholars program,” Alex said. “Crossing the student to intern bridge was easy for me; the intern to full-time employee bridge was tough. The Scholars program gave me the confidence to advocate for myself and express my interests.”
Developing Students for Future Careers
The annual Spectrum Scholars program, which just announced its sixth class, awards 15 students with $20,000 each in scholarships, two years of professional development and an opportunity for a paid internship, preparing students for successful careers.
Since it was launched in 2020, the nationally recognized Spectrum Scholars program has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to over 100 students. Today, the program continues to make a real difference for students as they step into their professional lives.
