Network Buildout is Part of Spectrum’s $5 Billion, Multiyear Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) Investment in Rural Broadband

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Spectrum today announced the launch of Spectrum Internet, Mobile, TV and Voice services to more than 750 homes and small businesses in rural Dona Ana County. The expansion follows the launch of more than 1,200 locations in neighboring El Paso County earlier this year.

Spectrum’s newly constructed fiber-optic network buildout is part of the company’s approximately $5 billion investment in unserved rural communities, which includes $1.2 billion won in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) RDOF auction. The company’s RDOF expansion will provide broadband access to approximately 1 million customer locations as estimated by the FCC across
24 states in the coming years.

“All of us know the difference between fast internet, slow internet, and no internet,” said U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján. “For many New Mexicans, accessible and affordable internet is the key to opening doors to new opportunities. Our small businesses, our health care system, and our schools suffer without access to reliable broadband. The Rural Digital Opportunity Fund and Spectrum’s service extension to more than 750 homes in Dona Ana County will help rural New Mexicans do their homework, receive care, and participate in the online economy.”

Spectrum Internet Gig, with download speeds of 1 Gbps, is now available throughout the buildout area. Spectrum Internet offers starting speeds of 300 Mbps, with Spectrum Internet Ultra providing download speeds of 500 Mbps. For small and medium-sized businesses, Spectrum Business Internet offers download speeds of 300 Mbps, 600 Mbps and 1 Gbps. Local residents and business owners should visit spectrumruralexpansion.com to learn more about when their home or business may be able to receive Spectrum services.

“Through RDOF, Spectrum is making a multiyear investment to extend gigabit broadband networks to unserved communities across America,” said Abe Robinson, Vice President of Construction leading Spectrum’s New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana RDOF expansions. “Our commitment is making it possible to deliver the high-value broadband, mobile, TV and voice services now available in rural Dona Ana County. We are providing superior connectivity to local residents and small businesses at highly competitive prices, backed by an organization committed to craftsmanship and service.”

Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the Best Internet Service Provider for Rural Areas in its 2021-22 ratings, Spectrum Internet also exceeded advertised download and upload speeds for all tiers measured — even during peak weeknight usage between 7 and 11 p.m. — according to the FCC’s most recent “Measuring Broadband America Fixed Broadband Report” issued in December 2021.

“Access to high-speed, reliable internet service is vital for economic growth, commerce, education, health care and much more,” said U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell (NM-2). “Charter’s network expansion through the FCC’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund program will bring updated broadband infrastructure and high-speed internet connections to families and small businesses across New Mexico who need it most.”

Lynn Ellins, Dona Ana County Commissioner, added, “Broadband is a crucial tool for the growth of our local economy, the development of our resident workforce and the education of our children. We are extremely pleased with Spectrum’s efforts to expand broadband access to more unserved areas of the South Valley, and we appreciate their growing commitment to and investment in the people of Dona Ana County.”

Spectrum’s Robinson credited Dona Ana County officials and El Paso Electric for enabling a prompt RDOF deployment.

“Permitting processes and access to local utility poles are key to bringing these RDOF projects to fruition,” Robinson said. “El Paso Electric moved quickly to help us access their poles and install new infrastructure, and local government representatives helped us navigate the necessary permitting procedures so we were able to start work without delay. Everyone’s cooperation made it possible for Dona Ana County residents to begin enjoying improved broadband services at a much quicker pace.”
