Spectrum Enterprise Demonstrates Application-Aware, Inter-Carrier Networking Solution using MEF 3.0 Interlude API
Policy-driven networking will offer clients visibility and control over their services

LOS ANGELES – Spectrum Enterprise, a part of Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR), today demonstrated its next-generation, policy-driven networking solution in a proof of concept (PoC) with its technology partners at the MEF18 global networking conference.
The Spectrum Enterprise PoC shows an application-aware, policy-driven, self-optimizing network service which orchestrates service changes across multiple service provider networks using the MEF 3.0 Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO) Interlude application programming interface (API). This is an agile approach to automating the service lifecycle for collaborative management and control of network services across different carrier network domains.
“Spectrum Enterprise is helping enterprises to transition from today’s static network services to dynamic network services that offer enterprises the visibility and control to meet their changing needs in the digital economy,” said Satya Parimi, Group Vice President, Data Products, Spectrum Enterprise. “Enterprises can now better manage their network environment by setting application-specific policies which can drive near real-time changes to the network to meet their performance expectations.”
The PoC showcases a healthcare provider’s hybrid Wide Area Network (WAN) that consists of SD-WAN locations and Ethernet locations. Some of the SD-WAN locations are serviced with an Internet connection from a partner carrier. The PoC demonstrates how a bandwidth-consuming and performance-sensitive training video application on this hybrid network can trigger near real-time changes to the network to ensure application performance.
The near real-time changes include the hybrid network’s ability to monitor an application’s network use in real-time and make changes to network bandwidth and Class of Service (CoS) parameters to ensure the application performance stays consistent based on user defined criteria. The demonstration also involves the use of the MEF 3.0 Interlude API to signal the partner carrier network for making some of the network changes.
Spectrum Enterprise collaborated with several partners for the PoC including:
- TELUS, as the carrier network partner;
- Nuage Networks from Nokia, as the SD-WAN partner;
- Sandvine, as the application visibility partner;
- Singularity Networks, as the intelligent engine and client control partner.
