MANCHESTER, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 2004--Charter Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR) will provide wireless Internet access to festival-goers at this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival based on innovative technology from Cisco Systems Inc. Free Wi-Fi access will be provided in designated areas to festival organizers, artists and the general public in one of the largest, single Wi-Fi deployments in the United States, with a coverage area of over five square miles.
Over 90,000 people are expected to attend Bonnaroo, which will be held from June 11-13, 2004 in Manchester, Tenn., and will feature some of the biggest names in the music business. Business-class Wi-Fi services are required to provide access at ticket entrances and at public Wi-Fi access tents in the Bonnaroo Festival Village. Festival-goers will also stay connected with friends and family using a new electronic message board application developed by Charter and the Bonnaroo Organizers.
"The production of an event the size of Bonnaroo is extraordinarily complex and this year we wanted to automate our ticket collection system and our communication process with the best wireless technology available," said Bonnaroo Organizer, Richard Goodstone. "In addition, we constantly look for ways to improve the attendee experience and make their participation more satisfying. This year we are providing wireless internet access for attendees at select sites and a message board application. We hope to build upon this in the years to come. Charter and Cisco provide the expertise to build a network we can trust."
"We expect that thousands of those in attendance at Bonnaroo will want to connect to the Internet, if only to check their e-mail," said Joe Romano, Vice President of Sales for Charter Business Networks. "As a leading provider of advanced broadband services, including High Speed Data, Charter is delighted to provide them an Internet connection."
The high-speed wireless connections are supported by Cisco Aironet 1200 Series IEEE 802.11g Access Points that provides users with very high speed performance and the Cisco Aironet 350 Series Wireless Bridge that vastly simplifies the deployment of connectivity to remote, locations such as the 600-acre farm in Manchester, Tenn. in the outskirts of Nashville where the festival is being held.
"Cisco is pleased to be working with Charter and Bonnaroo organizers to provide the Wi-Fi technology delivering wireless connectivity at the Bonnaroo Festival," said Jeff Zanardi, Director of Service Provider Marketing for Cisco Systems, Inc. "A breadth of Wi-Fi solutions from the Cisco Aironet and Linksys portfolios will be used in conjunction with Charter's high speed data infrastructure to provide the Bonnaroo Festival with the business-class solution required to manage a production of this size."
