Charter Deploys Video-on-Demand Technology in Pasadena

Share Article:

PASADENA, Calif. -- Digital technology called video-on-demand (VOD) that provides immediate/real-time selection of 300 Hollywood movies with full VCR functionality has been made available to some 167,000 homes here by Charter Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR). The Pasadena area is the first in Charter’s Los Angles Region to receive this technology, with a planned rollout to some 275,000 homes in the greater Los Angeles franchise area by year-end 2000.

“We’re providing video-on-demand technology to our customers with their busy lifestyles in mind,” said Tom Schaeffer, Senior Vice President of Operations for Charter’s Los Angeles Region. “VOD offers our customers control over their viewing times and preferences, and eliminates the trip to the video rental store. Because few of us have the time to watch an entire movie without interruption, this technology enables customers to stop, start, pause, and replay their selection through the use of the remote control while experiencing superior digital picture and sound quality,” he said.

Mr. Schaeffer said VOD will be a standard feature of his company’s Charter Digital CableTM product. “All current Charter digital customers in the Pasadena area have access to VOD now, as will our other customers in Los Angeles when the technology is rolled out to their areas,” Mr. Schaeffer continued.

The VOD technology being deployed by Charter in their Los Angeles Region was developed by DIVA Systems Corporation, a privately held company headquartered in Redwood City, California. Charter already provides DIVA’s VOD technology to some 7,000 customers in the greater Atlanta area.
