"Charter plans to have launched SDV in more than 60 percent of our footprint by the end of 2010," said Marwan Fawaz, Charter's Executive Vice President, Operations and Chief Technology Officer. "Our goal is to deliver value to our customers, offering the best choices in quality content, including high-definition programming and fast, reliable Internet speeds. Motorola's proven switched digital video solution allows us to meet this growing demand for HD and speed."
Motorola's SDV architecture dynamically transmits only those channels that are being watched in specific neighborhoods at any given time, maximizing the bandwidth efficiency. This process occurs as quickly as a customer can change channels, so it is seamless to the customer. The SDV launch will allow Charter to deploy more HD service and continue to enhance its Internet service. Charter has already deployed Motorola's SDV services in North Carolina, Missouri and Nevada, with more launches planned this year.
"As more of our digital customers upgrade to HD televisions and equipment, Charter is delivering more HD content - from movies to series and educational shows - to bring customers an expanded, enhanced viewing experience," said Doug Ike, Vice President of Advanced Video Engineering for Charter.
Charter's deployments now bring total operator commitments for the Motorola SDV solution to more than 30 million homes passed. Motorola's SDV portfolio encompasses asset, stream, session and edge management products that enable providers to reclaim bandwidth, deliver personalized content to consumers, and attract additional customers with niche programming.
"In a world with increasing demand for bandwidth, SDV is an outstanding solution to consumers' demand for access to a greater variety of programming," said John Burke, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. "With Motorola's market-leading SDV solution, service providers can reliably expand their channel offerings with more HD, local and niche programming."
