Over its 122 years, Caddell Dry Dock and Repair Co. has seen more than 50,000 vessels come across the New York Harbor for service. Based on Staten Island and serving the ports of New York and New Jersey, Caddell is one of the largest full-service shipyards in the New York region, providing repair and emergency maintenance services for vessels ranging from tugs and ferry boats to offshore supply vessels and wind farms.

Like New York City, Caddell never sleeps. It operates seven floating dry docks and 13 piers around the clock every day, and its 200 full-time employees work on an average of 450 boats and ships annually. The combination of significant volume, complex record-keeping needs and a large footprint that includes multiple land and sea operations posed a real challenge for Caddell’s connectivity services.

“We struggled to find WiFi powerful enough to cover our busy work area. We needed to streamline our internal operations and reporting processes, including daily reports, and the ability to produce certified payroll. Spectrum Business gave us the ability to take things from a pen and paper operation to using technology to digitally enhance our operation.”

Sal Molino, Vice President, Caddell Dry Dock

Caddell Dry Dock needed reliable WiFi coverage to blanket its vast work area that stretches across an eye-popping 7,200 feet of dock space along the Staten Island coastline.

“Caddell thought it was an impossible mission to get WiFi across the entire dock site,” said AnnMarie Boyle, Spectrum Business Enterprise Account Manager Mid-Market Sales. “The space was so large that we took a car ride to see its farthest section. Caddell managed their work manually, making it quite a burden and time-consuming, so we recommended solutions to maximize efficiency, which led to increased employee productivity.”

Better Speeds, Services and Productivity with Spectrum Business

Caddell Dry Dock chose to add a second high-speed Dedicated Fiber Internet circuit to expand connectivity across its entire worksite. They now use Spectrum Business’ full suite of services, including Ring Central, an easy, all-in-one communications app to make voice calls, texts, video conferencing and file transfers across multiple devices. Spectrum crews worked around dock equipment, ship parts and construction machinery to complete the fiber expansion.

To protect the business, its employees and its customers, several cameras were installed to monitor security across the dock. Adding Managed Network Edge offered Caddell a customized solution that provides a seamless experience and simplifies managing its network.

These upgraded services have made Caddell’s workflows simpler and more efficient. Employees can now easily connect to WiFi, allowing them to communicate with each other over cloud services instead of radios. And a high-tech solution replaced physical timecard verification, boosting security and efficiency by eliminating the need for employees to line up to clock out.

“We have more devices hooked up to the network than ever and have the speed we need to get things done,” said Sal. “This is a building block for us, and Spectrum Business is building out our technology infrastructure.”
