Autumn in Alabama & Michigan

Summer has been a busy time for Charter our Community and we’re keeping that momentum going right into autumn with two more events this September. Here’s a look at the communities we’ll be improving homes in – both are first-time locations for Charter our Community – and the stories of the homeowners and neighborhoods we’ll be helping.

 

Genesee County, Michigan: Louise

Louise is a sharp and active 92-year-old who has lived in her Genesee County home for 42 years. An active member of both her church and community, she currently lives with her 65-year-old son, David, who is limited physically due to his recovery from surgery and recent cancer treatments.

This mother and son live on limited income. Louise cannot afford to make the critical repairs needed to ensure their home is safe and healthy. Having always been very self-sufficient, Louise was reluctant to ask for help, but knew that she couldn’t fix her home on her own.

Charter our Community volunteers and Rebuilding Together Oakland County will be replacing the roof, resurfacing and adding a ramp to the front porch, painting the interior of the home, providing landscaping work and helping with other critical home repairs.  As a result of this effort, Louise and David will be able to remain active participants in their community.

 

Montgomery, Alabama: Transformation Montgomery

The Transformation Montgomery Community Center

Charter our Community volunteers and Rebuilding Together Central Alabama will work with Transformation Montgomery. This organization is a nonprofit community-development organization that seeks to transform and improve low-income communities in Montgomery.

Through this project, we’ll help convert an existing commercial building into a multi-use community center. This new and improved community facility will provide tutoring and after-school programs for children and young adults, job training opportunities for residents and a business incubator space for entrepreneurs from within the community.
