St. Petersburg, FL – Spectrum Bay News 9 and Spectrum News 13 today announced they will present "Hurricane Maria: Mainland Impact," a live one-hour special on the recent influx of Puerto Rican residents to Florida after Hurricane Maria. The special will also explore the anticipated impact on Florida’s infrastructure.
The live hour-long town hall will be hosted by News 13 Anchor Ybeth Bruzual from the Acacia Banquet Hall in Orlando, and by Bay News 9 Anchor Veronica Cintron from the Turin Aviation Group hangar at the Tampa Executive Airport. Throughout the program, Bruzual and Cintron will introduce viewers in Central Florida and the Bay regions to areas of Puerto Rico damaged by the storm and some of the families who have struggled in the days after – both on the island and in Florida – to highlight the human stories behind the devastating hurricane.
The special will include live interviews with local lawmakers and community influencers as they share various perspectives on how the influx of residents from Puerto Rico is expected to impact Florida’s education, housing, and political systems. Guests in Central Florida will include former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Antonia Novello; Florida State Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith; Florida State Representative Rene Plasencia; Osceola County School District Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace; Orange County School Board Chair Bill Sublette; and Frances Ortiz Molina, director of Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) for Kissimmee-Orlando. Guests from the Tampa Bay area will include Jorge Rodriguez, president of PACIV; Dr. Melissa Alsina, Moffitt Cancer Center; Ana Rivera, president of The Puerto Rican/Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Polk County; and Ed Franco, CEO of Turin Aviation Group.
The special is a continuation of Spectrum News Florida’s commitment to covering the ongoing crisis in Puerto Rico and its impact on Florida following the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. "Hurricane Maria: Mainland Impact" will air live on November 1 at 7 PM ET on channels 13, 1013, and 1213 in Central Florida and Bay-area channels 9, 1009, and 1209.
