Spectrum News Outpaced ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC in Daily Viewership in September, Averaging 2.2 Million Daily Viewing Households Across its Local Linear and Digital Platforms

STAMFORD, Conn. – With a national presidential address and the passing of England’s monarch making headlines in September, Spectrum audiences continued to turn to Spectrum News for coverage of these events and a deeper understanding of their impact on local communities. Spectrum News outperformed ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, as well as CNN, Fox News and MSNBC in daily viewership, averaging 2.2 million daily viewing households across its linear and digital platforms.*

And, at a time when Americans rank television as the most important source for local news,** in September Spectrum News also launched its connected TV app for Roku and Apple TV – expanding its local news app to streaming TV devices.

Four local Spectrum News networks, Orlando (19%), Austin (9%), Buffalo (9%), and New York City (4%), had higher month-over-month increases in Nielsen viewership than CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. ***

Viewership highlights for September include:****

  • The primetime premiere of “Spectrum News Challenge,” a weekly show aimed at encouraging news literacy and objective journalism among high school students, on September 7 at 8:30 p.m. was watched by 176,000 total viewing households, drawing more viewers to local Spectrum News’ networks than to primetime programming on ABC, CBS, Fox, as well as CNN, and MSNBC.
  • When national breaking news and events happen, Spectrum News’ local audience regularly turn to Spectrum News as an outlet they can rely on to localize the impact of these events. President Biden’s primetime address on September 1 from 8:03 p.m. to 8:27 p.m. ET recorded an average increase in viewership of 17% across all markets, and averaged 37% more viewership than CNN, and 22% more than MSNBC.
  • Spectrum News’ breaking news coverage of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 from 1:35 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET, recorded an average increase in viewership of 6% across all networks, besting CBS, Fox, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC.
  • Spectrum News’ special network-wide live coverage of the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on September 19 from 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. ET recorded an average increase in viewership of 25% across all markets, drawing higher viewership than CBS, Fox, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.

*Spectrum set-top box data is sourced from all markets where Spectrum News has distribution, and are based on a minimum threshold of five consecutive minutes of viewing on one station to count as a viewing HH.
