ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 2000--The first commercial deployment of multiple interactive services was announced today by Charter Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:CHTR). The technologies employed by Charter to achieve this unique integration are provided by Wink Communications, Inc., (Nasdaq:WINK), DIVA Systems Corporation, and Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE:SFA).

Stephen Silva, Charter's Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Technology, said Charter is now offering the first application of Wink's Enhanced Broadcasting product with VOD technology in its Los Angles Region.

"We initiated our second commercial rollout of video-on-demand technology last month to some 275,000 digital-capable homes in our Los Angeles Region, starting in Pasadena," Mr. Silva said. "Our first VOD market was in the suburbs of Atlanta, and customer response there and in Pasadena to date has been fantastic. This integration of multiple interactive services in Pasadena is a first, and I'm confident it will add even more value to our digital offering."

The integration of Wink's Enhanced Broadcasting product with DIVA's VOD technology is an industry first and provides Charter Digital Cable(TM) customers access to product information, on-demand news, coupons and shopping on more than 20 digital channels according to Mr. Silva. "Wink's technology enables programmers and advertisers to enhance the digital cable customers' viewing experience by providing interactive overlays related to what's being viewed as supplemental text and graphics on the television screen. When interactivity is available, a symbol appears, and the viewer can then choose to interact with the program, or advertisement with their remote control."

Mr. Silva said both VOD technology and Wink interactive offerings are provided automatically, and at no additional charge, to Charter Digital Cable customers in Pasadena.

"The combination of Wink and DIVA's video-on-demand enables Charter to offer a very powerful suite of interactive services," said Ian Jefferson, DIVA's Vice President of Sales. "We have experienced great success with Charter in the initial deployment of our VOD technology at its cable system in the suburbs of Atlanta, and we expect this new combination of interactive services that we're announcing today will bring customer satisfaction to new levels and will be equally compelling to other cable operators."

"Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer(R) set-tops and network platform are enabling Charter Communications to deliver on the promise of interactive TV," said Ken Klaer, Vice President and General Manager of Marketing and Business Development for Scientific-Atlanta's Subscriber Networks. "Every one of our three-million-plus digital Explorer set-tops deployed to-date is capable of delivering multiple interactive TV applications like Wink and DIVA. Our technology leadership gives our customers a distinct competitive advantage by offering multiple applications to their customers that other solutions don't have."

"This alliance allows Charter to maximize their digital service offerings," said Melinda White, Vice President of Cable Sales for Wink. "It clearly demonstrates Wink's leadership in application integration, and our successful co-existence with navigation and operating systems, middleware, and now VOD."

With 6.3 million customers, Charter Communications, a Wired World(TM) company, is among the nation's largest broadband communications companies.
